Since early December numerous teachers, parents, former students, and other helpers have been assisting approximately 50 of our students in grades 7-12 in learning about God’s creation and the laws whereby He governs the universe. Visitors will find the school abuzz with activity after school on Tuesdays, with a smaller group busy in the shop and gym on most Saturday mornings. Our Science Olympiad program is an opportunity for students (and their adult helpers) to explore and grow in areas of interest by participating in 23 different group studies of events such as Chemistry Lab, Forensics, Mission Possible and Ornithology. These opportunities teach valuable lessons while students figure out how to do such things as engineer devices to complete assigned tasks, learn proper lab techniques, engage in problem-solving, explore how systems of the human body function, and examine processes that shape the earth. Along with a variety of other skills, Science Olympiad is especially useful in teaching students how to work together as a team to accomplish complex tasks. The senior high students participated in one invitational tournament in February, at Thornapple-Kellogg High School. The junior high group attended an invitational tournament at Allendale High School on February 26. Both events allowed all team members to practice their skills and get feedback on their progress. Learning what we don’t know is often as helpful as learning how far we have come. The first official test for both junior and senior high participants comes on March 26 with the regional tournament at GVSU. A number of events are open for public viewing and anyone is welcome.
